The Art of Downsizing: Designing a Luxe Closet for a Penthouse in River Oaks

The Art of Downsizing: Designing a Luxe Closet for a Penthouse in River Oaks

Embarking on a year-long transformation, I had the privilege of assisting a client in downsizing from a 6,800-square-foot penthouse to a 3,800-square-foot residence at Inwood Manor, a distinguished high-rise adjacent to River Oaks in Houston, Texas.  This project entailed a complete renovation, focusing on designing a luxurious and functional closet space tailored to the client’s needs.

Understanding the Client’s Needs

The client, transitioning to a more compact space, faced the challenge of accommodating her extensive wardrobe. Collaborating with professional organizers, we meticulously planned a closet that would house her cherished items while maintaining an airy and uncluttered ambiance.

Design Features

Glass-Front Drawers: Installed for storing socks, intimates, sweaters, clutches, and bags, these drawers offer both visibility and elegance.

Pull-Out Shoe Racks: To efficiently display and access her footwear collection, we incorporated pull-out shoe racks, maximizing space utilization.

Open Adjustable Shelving: Ideal for her luxury handbags, these shelves provide flexibility and showcase her collection beautifully.

Pull-Down Rods: Considering the client’s petite stature, pull-down rods were essential for easy access to higher hanging sections.

Custom Accessories: We integrated multiple hooks, a dedicated jewelry hanging section, custom pull-out pants racks for skirts and bottoms, valet rods for outfit selection, and discreet spaces for longer dresses.

Concealed Safe: A hidden safe within a drawer ensures the security of valuable items without compromising aesthetics.

Specialty Racks: Pull-out scarf and belt racks were added for organized and quick access to accessories.

The Renovation Journey

Starting from a completely gutted unit, the transformation spanned an entire year. Early involvement allowed for strategic planning, ensuring that every detail was addressed before construction milestones like wall installations. This proactive approach facilitated a spacious, clutter-free design, accommodating the client’s current belongings with room for future additions.

A Personal Touch

Revisiting the completed space, the client shared heartfelt stories associated with her wardrobe items, rediscovered through the organizers’ efforts. Each piece held memories of travels and experiences, underscoring the sentimental value embedded in the design.

Conclusion

This project at Inwood Manor exemplifies the harmony of functionality and luxury in interior design. By understanding the client’s unique needs and incorporating thoughtful features, we created a closet space that is both practical and reflective of her rich personal history.
